Jade & hardstone amulets

What it is

Jade was the stone of immortality: Neolithic pig-dragons and bi discs, Han dynasty cicadas for the dead man’s tongue, gangmao exorcism batons, and later gourds, bats and peaches.

Making yours

1–8 cm nephrite carved with abrasives. Cicadas have a few bold “Han eight-cut” strokes. Practise in soapstone or serpentine.
