What it is
Cheap lead-tin badges sold at shrines such as Canterbury (Becket), Santiago (scallop), Rome and Walsingham, pinned to hats as proof of pilgrimage and protection on the road. Secular and erotic badges parodied them.Making yours
2–8 cm openwork cast in pewter (lead-tin) from two-part stone moulds, with an integral pin or sewing loops. Easily recreated in soapstone moulds.
